NOVEMBER 2025 SERVICE SCHEDULE FOR SAINT PATRICK’S CHAPEL IN CLIFDEN, IRELAND
Three years to the day of Saint Patrick Orthodox Chapel’s first Divine Liturgy, our service schedule continues. We will be visiting Stradbally and Belfast this month in honour of the Mother of God. This is because her wonder-working Kursk Root Icon will be visiting Ireland. Indeed, the veneration of icons occupies a significant role in the Orthodox faith which can be sometimes misunderstood.
Theologically, we understand God to be the original iconographer, not only in “creating man in His own image,” but also incarnating as a fully-human and full-divine person of Christ. As the 7th Ecumenical Council declared in 787 AD, “Icons do with colour what Scriptures does with words.” Moreover, New Martyr Maria Skobtsova, killed in the gas chambers of WWII for her humanitarian work in Paris, observed that, “Each person is the very icon of God incarnate in the world.” As we venerate this wonderful icon, a witness of God’s enduring love and protection (unscathed despite being targeted by an explosive bomb in March 1898), we are called to be living icons of Christ for one another.

The prayer purifies the soul and keeps the mind in check. The most perfect work is done in the depths of the human soul, which is hermetically sealed and known only to God. And so we witness something extraordinary: people who are transformed into children of God, even though they had reached the very depths of their self-destructiveness.
